How I can help
Emotional Distress & Difficulties
Emotional distress does not always fit neatly into a diagnosis. You may feel overwhelmed by emotions, disconnected from them, or caught in emotional reactions that seem difficult to understand or change.
Therapy can help you make sense of these experiences, understand what may be underneath them, and develop healthier ways of responding to yourself and others.
Common signs
- Emotions feel overwhelming or difficult to regulate — feelings may become intense very quickly or take a long time to settle.
- Feeling emotionally numb, empty or disconnected — you may struggle to feel much at all, or find yourself switching off when things become difficult.
- Difficulty understanding or expressing what you feel or need — you may know something is wrong but find it hard to identify, put into words, or communicate your emotional experience.
- Persistent shame, guilt or harsh self-criticism — you may frequently feel that you are not good enough, have done something wrong, or need to push yourself harder.
- Strong reactions to rejection, criticism or feeling misunderstood — seemingly small interpersonal events may trigger intense hurt, anger, anxiety or withdrawal.
- Irritability, anger or emotional outbursts — you may become frustrated or angry quickly, have reactions that feel stronger than you intended, or find it difficult to calm down once emotions have escalated.
- Recurring emotional patterns that are difficult to change — even when you understand your reactions intellectually, the same feelings and coping responses keep returning.
How therapy can help
- Understand the patterns, triggers and experiences underlying your emotional reactions
- Learn to recognise, tolerate and regulate difficult emotions without suppressing or becoming overwhelmed by them
- Explore emotional needs that may have been ignored, invalidated or difficult to express
- Work with shame, self-criticism and longstanding negative beliefs about yourself
- Develop healthier ways to communicate needs, set boundaries and respond in relationships
- Build greater emotional awareness, self-compassion and flexibility rather than simply trying to control or eliminate difficult feelings
This may be a good fit if
- You have been struggling emotionally for some time, even if you do not have a clear diagnosis.
- You understand some of your difficulties but still find yourself repeating the same emotional or behavioural patterns.
- You are looking for therapy that explores why these patterns developed as well as how to change them.
This may not be the right fit if
- You are mainly seeking a diagnostic assessment rather than ongoing psychotherapy.
- You currently need acute crisis intervention or emergency mental health care rather than scheduled outpatient therapy.
